iPortrait Series

Social media tools like Google® and Facebook® have significantly affected contemporary visual culture and visual identity through mediated communication, visual information aggregation, and the everyday techno sociocultural visual interface. For Interface Community Series, Google® image search becomes a collaborator in aggregating, graphing and yielding unintended insight about how contemporary digital culture exposes community. Bots crawl the 19 US and 17 World data centers using a variety of algorithms to search and index uploaded content. The results are weighted based on trends and then the organic results are displayed. The result is a socio cultural visual dialogue that reveals insights about community in digital visual culture.

Coefficient of Reality: Trace Series

Combining drawing and photography has been part of my art practice for many years. The series entitled, Coefficient of Reality are photographic and drawing traces. For me traces are indexical dynamic forms of representation, which serves to guide, point out, or facilitate a reference. This series (photographic and graphite rubbing) are for me a negotiation with material forms in time. The images are an exploration of the technologies of visualization (camera and graphite) that enact a tension between the hand and the medium. The fusion of the photographic with the graphite rubbing trace demonstrates that images are more than representation. The viewer experiences a gap in the fusion of the two mediums, a breach between copy and reality, and an instance of another time taking place. The viewer becomes an animator and interpreter in the performance of the trace⎯experiencing in context the fusion and division in understanding of the subject/object represented.
